Seriously?

"Alumna sues college because she hasn't found a job."

Seriously? I mean, seriously?

The best line in the whole article: "As Thompson sees it, any reasonable employer would pounce on an applicant with her academic credentials, which include a 2.7 grade-point average and a solid attendance record."

2.7? 2.7?!

Not to brag (but I'm going to anyway), I graduated on an accelerated schedule with only one A- to ruin my perfect 4.0 (curses class participation!) and started out, like everyone, working for beans. And I was lucky to work for those beans so soon, but three months is nothing in the fresh-faced college job hunt! I have no words for this woman. I am utterly speechless.

The best line was: ""They favor more toward students that got a 4.0. They help them more out with the job placement,"

Gee, ya' think they promote someone who was able to earn a 4.0 GPA?

Plus, grammar anyone? "They help them more out..." This might explain the 2.7 GPA.

I have worked as a recruiter for over 30 years and having a degree is no guarantee of an interview much less a job, especially these days. Three months out of school and no job? I have over 500 people in my database with advanced degree and certifications plus 10-20 years of work experience who have been unemployed since last December! Welcome to reality!

Interesting she does not comment on the extent of her own efforts to secure employment? Job boards, Internet searches, networking, etc. need to be daily events in ones job search.

Now she's REALLY screwed. A 2.7 GPA is nothing to brag about, and a reputation for having a "professional victim" mentality and a penchant for starting frivolous lawsuits is enough to make any prospective employer rightfully avoid her like the plague. I wouldn't hire her. Would you?

I cannot believe this woman! Many who are in the same situation are opting to carry on and attend graduate school; hoping the economy will shape up in a couple years. Oh, perhaps she can't get into grad school with that pathetic 2.7 GPA.

Please she needs to get a grip! I graduated last August with a BS double major in Biology and Psychology which included HEAVY chemistry and mathematics coursework with a 3.55 and I have YET to find a job. Her 2.7 is crap, I'm sorry. I am certainly not looking to sue my university. They're not the ones that are responsible for the recession. If she's looking to blame anyone it should be the housing industry which is a large cause of the recession and perhaps frivolous lawsuits like hers.

She has common sense, if someone takes your money and didn’t deliver what was promised you should be to sue. Accordingly to our leaders she has to compete with whole world to have job in U.S.A. US jobs traded in WTO negotiations these days as commodities and finished goods. Welcome to new “America – Casino”, where most of people lose and “Wall street House” wins even during recession with our money in the hands!

72,000 for a 2.7? I wonder how much of that 72k edumacation she is responsible for?

As a recruiter I google every candidate, this will show up for 10 years, I know i wouldn't touch her with a 100 foot pole

I know, let's take this as a "cause" and sue the republicans. They said the economy wasn't getting bad. Then let's sue the democrats, they said they could fix it. Then let's sue our parents for not taking us to Disneyworld every summer.

Anonymous said...

Heh. I also am got a 2.7 GPA, too. I say she shud sue then for all thay has becuase they shud of got her a job after all her years a hard work.

Anonymous said...

now that is funny.

Anonymous said...

would love to see her resume. Can you see stupid just from a resume? I bet she thinks spellcheck means

C H E C K, there, I spelt it

Anonymous said...

LOL I loved it when she said that she had good attendance. I know all the recruiters are checking those records...

I have news for this gal, the IT field is getting to be very tough to survive in, let alone thrive in. She had the years in college and the best she could do was a 2.7GPA? Good luck with that lawsuit, if by chance she were to win, if I were the college, I would then turn around and sue her $72K for each student that had a higher GPA than her because of her mediocre efforts as a student, it reflected negatively on all students. Now that it is the national media, anyone coming from that college is probably mediocre too. Why hire anyone from that college? Her 2.7GPA reflects negatively on anyone that attended the same curriculum that this gal did.

I don't know of any reputable school that would promise employment for graduating. They might brag about how some of their students have gotten great jobs, but there is no guarantee that a degree means you will get a job.

In the US, today, we have people with advanced degrees working in unskilled labor as construction, restaurant, airline stewards, etc.

There is a glut of educated labor in this country.

Get a college education to expand your horizons and flex your brain.

Exercise your own smarts to make a living.

Don't expect institutions to hand you a living!

Wow... maybe she should sue her high school as well... for her lack of knowledge in grammar... or did I learn the difference in got and have in middle school... hmmm

"They're supposed to say, 'I got this student, her attendance is good, her GPA is all right -- can you interview this person?' They're not doing that," she said."

Anonymous said...

Hmmm.. Does this mean that High School grads can now sue their High School if they can't get into the college of their choice?

Anonymous said...

OMG! Would you want someone like her working on your IT systems? HECK NO! I am currently finishing my Graduate program, and with luck will finish with a 3.95 on top of a 3.93 undergrad GPA. I don't expect anyone to get me a job but me! You know it will be a slow news day if she gets on the morning talk shows....please let's hope not!

A 2.7 GPA shows that the student wasn't willing to work just a lil harder. Please! A 2.7 is basically showing up to class for several courses and then only sort of paying attention. Having a 2.7 says that you're lazy, you don't listen, and you're not a hard worker. What employer wants to hire someone with THOSE lovely attributes?

"They're supposed to say, 'I got this student, her attendance is good, her GPA is all right -- can you interview this person?' They're not doing that."

--Trina Thompson

If that's what she was expecting her school to say, then it's no wonder she hasn't found a job yet. A good attendence record and okay grades are not exactly on the top of most companies' requirement list. Knowledge in the field helps. Does she have any knowledge in her field? Is her attendence her only strength?

It's her job to point out her strengths, not the school's. And I got a feeling she didn't do that.

I've read some stupid stuff in my life, but this one about tops them all! Is this woman for real? The way it looks to me she is just trying to find someone else to be responsible for her own failures as a student/graduate! Would you even want to broadcast a 2.7 GPA??? For crying out loud! I graduated with a 3.87 GPA. So what??? That was not a guarantee that I would get a job! She needs to wake up and realize that she has to actually DO something to get a job! And, to top it all, she is claiming to be poor so she won't pay the court fees... You know who's paying for that, right?

How to avoid going to work:

- Slack off in college and get a 2.7 GPA. This won't get past the screening process for a lot of companies.
- Don't do enough homework about the job market to understand that "attendance" is expected, not rewarded.
- Seek employment in a field where all of the growth is off shore. (Did she do any homework?)
- Play the victim and get your story on Google so now every employer knows you are poison.

Can you imagine how bad her resume must be?

Who are all of these anonymous people?? Wheew.

Biggest load of bullshit I've ever heard.

Ever heard of a bad economy, lady?

Wow, I earned a 3.8 GPA for my MBA in International Business (after being out of school for 30 years) and I have been working make-do jobs for over a year. This is reality! An advanced degree, thirty years work experience and basically unemployed, but I am not about to sue my school. It is my responsibility to find gainful employment. By the way, they should obviously favor students with a great GPA and a penchant for correct grammar.

Who is going to want to hire this whiny little baby?! SUCK IT UP-- these are tough times and there are a heck of a lot of people without jobs. It's called life. No one said it was easy.

Plus, she just graduated in April. Give it time.

This has to be THE MOST ABSURD act anyone can do. Miss Trina, WAKE UP YOU BRAT! Life isn't as peachy as it was in your mother's womb, what with her adulating you and telling you how perfect you are. Here is your wake up call!

Try harder! If that doesn't work, try harder than that! 3 months out of college with 2.7 average is going to require just a little more effort and stress and maybe years of scrubbing someone's ass much less the floors at McDonalds. Look at the big picture you dolt and don't blame anyone because of your false hopes.

Here's more news for you: A job finds YOU, not the other way around and you bet your ass they will hire someone with a 4.0 over 2.7 average. 70K for a 2.7 average? What a waste and a shame, really.

1) Woman sues McDonals because she doesn't understand that coffee is hot
2) Nursling Trina sues because she can't bear the stress of looking for a job
3) What next?

Bring back America.

What a joke. 2.7 GPA - perhaps she should have been a better student. The cream rises to the top, and those outside the cream try to find other ways of making ends meet. Nice.

a 3.95 GPA.

OMG, give me a break!! Talking about not holding yourself accountable. With that attitude you better get used to say, "would you like to supersize that." What a waste of a degree, especially a 2.7 GPA is nothing to brag about.

Better yet, I wonder how much of that $72k she actually had to pay?

If you want to read something hilarious, go here. This is the court filing. On page three, she describes the "facts of her case." http://i.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2009/images/08/03/thompson.pdf

It says, "I am seeking reinbursment of $70,000 from my tutison because the Office of career advancement information technology couselors are not making sure their e-recriuting clients call the graduates that recently finished college for an interview to get a job placement." .... the spelling and grammar errors were copied exactly as she wrote it.

Wow, every employer's dream....a dummy with good attendance!

Wow, things certainly have changed since I was in college and people sure have gotten smart.

When I graduated from college (a major state university with around 35K students) about 23 years ago the average GPA of a business major (IT was in the COB) who attended for 4 years was about 2.7. Accounting was 2.1, and we have what is considered one of the top 10 Accounting programs in the country. The Big 6 (or however many there were then) used to come to our school in droves and higher every accounting major in sight that had even a mediocre GPA.

4.0 in business school was absolutely unheard of and absolutely not possible due to weed out classes, where the class was purposely engineered so that virtually nobody got higher than a "B" and the majority were getting C's and D's in those designated weed out classes. Anyone that had a GPA higher than 3.0 with a business degree was grabbed up immediately after graduation.

So all of the people on here bragging about their 3.95's and everything else, what have you majored in that you've been able to get such high grades?

I've heard that grade inflation is a huge problem in colleges these days and apparently that must be true, as any college worth its weight in salt would not have a curriculum so easy that a 4.0 was even possible much less probable.

Anyway, good luck to Trina. And just remember, Trina, you and the rest of the American citizenry have been sold a bill of goods of late with regards to a college education. They'll tell you that college is the ticket to an easier life and in some regards it is. They'll quote placement rates for their graduates that sound almost too good to be true. What they don't tell you is that you might not be able to do any better then working as a retail clerk with that college degree what with the "global economy" and the over-educated workforce.

Hopefully you didn't go into to debt to finance this venture because it is not worth it to incur a large debt for a college education anymore.

In the meantime, I would try to get a job with the Government, as they are slowly taking over everything and they are the only entity that is currently expanding and creating jobs. With the pension and other perks, THAT is the true ticket to the easy life.

And to the person who got an MBA and has 30 years experience here's a little newsflash for you -corporate America doesn't want you once you reach that age so your qualifications are moot. I'm not sure why you even get an MBA at that point unless you want to try to teach.

My inflation calculator puts a 2.7 GPA to something slightly below idiot.

Corporate America knows you now Trina. This is what they will see:
- She'll bitch that she doesn't get a bonus that she feels she deserves
- She will be the one to drink the last of the coffee without refilling it
- She will bitch when she's asked to stay an hour or two to meet a project milestone because she doesn't miss an episode of So You Think You Can Dance
- She'll be the first to respond "Separate check please" when out to lunch with her colleagues
- Regifts presents for the corporate christmas exchange
- Believes that taking a 30 minute dump while facebooking on her cell should be included in a typical 8-hour work day
- Will demand a better computer 1 year after receiving one because the new recruits are getting the next gen models

Hang on to hope dear. Check with your local Waste Management company, even they could use a DBA or help hitting the power button on their computers.

I wholly agree with many of the anonymous commenters - this woman is living in some kind of fantasy world that doesn't necessarily intersect with our own real world! Many colleges promise aid in the job search, but a realistic individual would understand that that "promise" can only go so far. My own college promised something similar, providing a Web site that allowed students to connect with their database of employers. However, it was up to the student to attain the desirable credentials (that is, good grades, experience, etc.) to get his or her foot in the door. Regardless of the promises have been made, at the end of the day, one must be responsible for his or her own future.
